Special Event at The Center for Eating Disorders at Sheppard Pratt
Co-Presenters: Jenni Schaefer and Jennifer J. Thomas, PhD, Harvard Medical School
This 2-hour professional education presentation will focus on cognitive-behavioral strategies for body image disturbance. Using evidence-based approaches such as Fairburn’s (2008) Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Eating Disorders as a base, we will draw from Dr. Thomas’s research and clinical experience—and Jenni Schaefer’s personal experience of recovery—to describe how clinicians can breathe life into the manual. Specifically, we will present findings on the cognitive and behavioral features of body image disturbance (e.g., checking, avoidance), and describe the innovative ways that we have engaged reluctant patients—turning exposures into fashion shows, cognitive restructuring into video jeopardy, and tailor-designing all manner of behavioral experiments. Teaching strategies will include lectures, video, role-plays, and group discussions.
